Oak

feet firmly rooted on the hilltop
gazing over blooming fields of green
thrush clutched to her bosom
silver spider silk weaving hair

bearing the scars of lightning
with names carved on her skin
she lifts weathered, druid limbs
humming along with bumble bees

a creaky rope swing on one arm
newborn rabbits nibbling at her toes
she hides speckled fledglings
while spiral worms bore into bones

on quilts spread beneath her shelter
she’s heard impassioned promise
the giggles of climbing children
tenacious chants of marching ants

down in smoggy suburb valley
where three story condos grow
she smells the gas stench rising
as chainsaws spew fatal fumes
